> So, you want to buy a new computer? Like most people you figure on buying one off the shelf and forgetting it. So what's the difference between a customer built and an off-the-shelf, and why is custom built more expensive? > Let's take a look at what's inside a system that has been bought off-the-shelf. If you were to take the cover off of a store bought computer, you would probably be very disappointed to find that for about four to six hundred dollars, you only have a little computer board tucked away in a very small computer case. Bottom line, there isn't much to it. They sell you on the processor but the rest of the computer is made up of the cheapest parts available which have a life expectancy of two to three years max. To make things more complex, a lot of makers also engineer proprietary configurations that require you to get all of your parts through the manufacturer. The biggest kicker is that the computer case is so small that if your motherboard were to go bad, you wouldn't be able to replace it easily. So bottom line, you need to buy another computer every 2-3 years. Great business plan huh? Also interesting to note, is that you only get ONE optical drive(cd/dvd combo drive) which is fine unless you wanted to copy a homemade dvd you made with your camcorder of last year's christmas party. > Finally, let's take a look at why they are so SLOW! There are many different parts on your computer that do different things. Instead of having different (add-in) cards to do different things like Graphics(video), they use boards that consolidate everything into the motherboard. Now, this sounds all neat and tidy, until you go to play a game and find that your computer bogs down. Why? Because the motherboard can't delegate any tasks to add-on cards, so the CPU must do ALL of the tasks, thereby bogging your computer down. To make things MORE fun, they also install a bunch of junk programs you will never use so everytime your computer starts up, they are loaded to, which ALSO slows things down. The best part of all this is, if you have any problems with your shelf system, you can always call a tech support person from a third world country who knows little about your system. Oh! and let us not forget the language barrier. Doesn't that sound like FUN? > Now, what makes Custom made computers different? You get what you want, it's just that simple and not what you don't want because the technician will have a on-on-one interview with you to find out exactly what you will need. This way, the hard decisions are taken care of for you. If you were to take off the cover of a custom built computer from Out of the Box Solutions LLC, you will notice that the motherboard has add-in cards which makes it faster. There are TWO optical drives, standard on our systems as well as a card reader if you want it. The operating system will ONLY have what you WANT on it and not a lot of useless junk programs you didn't ask for. Since an interview was conducted, our technician will make sure there is enough speed and accessories to facilitate all of your computing needs. We will also custom configure your computer. Setting up your email, transferring your files from your old computer and configuring your new computer so that when you push the 'on' button, you are ready to go. Or, you can sit on the phone with a tech support person from a third world country, the choice is yours. > The bottom line here is, you get what you pay for. > Hopefully after reading this, you can make an INFORMED choice.
